Raising the Next Generation of Smart Money Kids

Money Smarts for Little Legends was born from one simple belief: every child deserves to grow up financially confident. We create joyful, age-appropriate financial education that turns big money concepts into exciting adventures.

Our programme is designed specifically for Kenyan children ages 7–12, connecting global financial wisdom with everyday local experiences — from Kenyan shillings to M-Pesa, school tuck shops to family budgets.

We partner with schools, parents, and community groups to deliver a curriculum that is fun, practical, and life-changing.

📚 The Curriculum

Four carefully designed modules that build on each other — from understanding money to mastering a personal budget.

🪙

Module 1: What Is Money?

4 Lessons

Children discover what money is, where it comes from, and why it matters. Through stories and hands-on activities, they explore the journey from barter trade to the Kenyan shilling and beyond.

1.1 — Before Money: Barter Trade

Explore how people exchanged goods before coins existed. Act out a barter market in the classroom!

1.2 — History of Money

From shells to shillings — a fun journey through how money evolved across cultures and centuries.

1.3 — Kenyan Currency Today

Identify and count Kenyan coins and notes. Explore M-Pesa as a form of digital money used daily.

1.4 — How Do People Earn Money?

Explore different ways adults earn: jobs, businesses, farming. Draw a picture of your dream job!

Module 2: Needs vs. Wants

4 Lessons

One of the most important financial concepts: distinguishing between what we must have and what we simply desire. Kids learn to make intentional choices and practice delayed gratification.

2.1 — Needs: The Essentials

Identify what every person needs to survive — food, shelter, clothing, education, healthcare.

2.2 — Wants: The Nice-to-Haves

Recognize wants: toys, gadgets, candy, extra shoes. Why do wants sometimes feel like needs?

2.3 — Making Choices

Introduce trade-offs. If you spend on a want, what need might suffer? Practice sorting scenarios.

2.4 — Waiting for What You Want

The power of delayed gratification. Read "The Marshmallow Experiment" story and connect it to money.

Module 3: Savings Goals

3.1 — Why Save?

Explore what happens when you save consistently vs. spending everything. The "ant and the grasshopper" lens.

3.2 — Setting a SMART Goal

Child-friendly SMART goals — Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound. Set one today!

3.3 — The 3 Jars Method

Divide money into Spend 🟡, Save 🔵, Give 🟢. Allocate a sample allowance across all three jars.

3.4 — My Savings Plan

Each child creates a personalised savings plan with a target amount, deadline, and weekly saving amounts.

4.1 — Counting Money Accurately

4.2 — Income & Expenses

4.3 — My Money Tracker

Each child fills in their own weekly money tracker: what they earned, spent, and saved.

4.4 — Budget Challenge & Review

Final challenge: plan a "family day out" with a set budget. Present choices to class. Celebrate all wins!

💡 Tips for Parents & Teachers

Small actions at home and in the classroom make an enormous difference.

01

Use Real Money

Whenever possible, use real coins and notes. Tactile experience makes abstract concepts stick for young learners.

02

Connect to Real Life

Involve kids in real grocery trips, markets, or M-Pesa transactions. Real context is the best classroom.

03

Celebrate Small Wins

Every shilling saved is worth celebrating! Praise effort and patience, not just the final goal amount.

04

Let Them Make Mistakes

Allow small spending mistakes with their own money — they learn more from experience than from lectures.

05

Model Good Habits

Talk openly about budgeting and saving at home. Kids learn financial behaviour by watching the adults around them.

06

Keep It Playful

Games, stories, and role-play work better than lectures. If it isn't fun, it won't stick for this age group.
